Xiaomi CyberDog: discover the new bio-inspired quadrupedal robot dog powered by Intel

Years ago, when Xiaomi was still a fledgling smartphone company, it never hesitated to talk about its plans to build an ecosystem of smart objects. Come 2021, and most mainstream users may have said that Xiaomi has already seen tremendous success in expanding beyond smartphones. For the company, however, it has barely reached its limit. Earlier today, the Chinese tech company announced the Xiaomi CyberDog. If you’ve guessed by the name, you’re probably right – it is indeed a four-legged robot dog. What’s more – the company has opened it up to help developers operate it, along with Xiaomi itself.

So what exactly is the Xiaomi CyberDog? A more official description of it by Xiaomi considers it an “bio-inspired quadrupedal robot dog”. To do this, Xiaomi claims to have designed its own servos that can allow a wide range of nimble movements for the not-so-hairy tailwag. The output torque and maximum rotational speed of the Xiaomi CyberDog are 32Nm and 220rpm respectively, and if you’ve never tried to judge your real dog for their output torque, you might want to try calculate it. Joking aside, Xiaomi claimed that such technology allowed its robot dog to perform complicated maneuvers such as back flips, and to travel at speeds of up to 3.2 m / s, or around 11.5 km. per hour.

Doing it all is an Nvidia Jetson Xavier NX AI computing platform specifically designed for on-board and advanced computing setups, which apparently produces 21 TOPS performances to serve as the dog’s brain. Further cloning of real dogs consists of “11 high-precision sensors that provide instant feedback to guide their movements.” Xiaomi says the range of motion would also include touch response via sensors, sight via built-in cameras, ultrasonic sensors and geolocation modules. The Intel RealSense D450 Depth Module powers CyberDog’s sense of depth, paired with interactive AI-controlled cameras, ultra-wide-angle fisheye cameras with binocular vision, and compatibility with computer vision algorithm training.

All of this will apparently allow the Xiaomi CyberDog to move quickly and naturally, while measuring an area and creating a map to avoid obstacles. The cameras are also trained with human posture recognition and facial recognition, so your robot dog can also recognize a friendly pat and even your smile, to react much like you hoped your real dog would. Funnily enough, even with all the cloning of emotions, the CyberDog’s capabilities seem best displayed with features like three USB-C ports and an HDMI port, which apparently would allow those who wish to experiment with it to try out. new technologies.

Xiaomi has opened CyberDog and is looking to sell 1,000 units at CNY 9,999 (around Rs 1.15 lakh). He also promised to create an “Xiaomi Open Source Community”, suggesting that he is hardly done doing more such things in the future. Whichever side of the debate you find yourself on, there’s no denying that CyberDog looks like a plausible foray into personal robotics for a brand looking to become a household name in China, India and beyond.
