“I like it”: a veterinarian offers a new service near Colman

COLMAN, SD (KELO) – A new veterinary service opened last week near Colman, and it offers a unique service that could literally be brought to your town.

Dr Aidan McNeil always wanted to be a veterinarian.

“I grew up on a horse ranch, and the horse ranch of course had all the other animals, and I loved animals,” McNeil said.

McNeil was once a science professor, but she later graduated from the University of California, Davis Veterinary School in 2006.

“I really enjoyed being a teacher, but I was teaching young women that they could be whatever they wanted to be, work in science and math careers, and I was like, ‘I still really want to be a vet. ” ” she said.

McNeil and her husband Jeff Clark moved in 2015 from California to Custer, South Dakota and then to the Colman area about six months ago.

Colman Veterinary Services opened Nov. 15 about five miles outside of Colman. Clark will be the practice director.

“The husband of a veterinarian. There are stories of course, but no, it’s completely different. It works side by side. This will test the marriage a bit. Not a lot, a little. And we’re going to have a lot of fun with that, and he’s a doctor, so I respect that a lot, ”said Jeff Clark.

They offer services for horses, cattle, pets and more.

“I see lizards, snakes, turtles and things like that. I make horses, llamas, alpacas. I saw elephants, camels – everything, ”McNeil said.

Services include home wellness care, surgery and euthanasia.

“So vaccines, spikes, neutrals, but also general medicine and surgery. Enjoying the surgery as much as I do, we will be doing tumor removals, dental work, all the things you would normally expect to see in a small animal vet clinic, ”McNeil said.

The clinic is located in a trailer. It will also become a mobile clinic during the warmer months. McNeil is excited for what’s to come.

“I love working with people and their animals and that it’s a different day every day, and your brain is constantly fed with questions and problems, so it’s like doing puzzles all the time. I love it, ”McNeil said.
