JAMMU, 1st September: A special guest lecture was organized today at the School of Biotechnology, University of Jammu under the patronage of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
Professor Jagat Kumar Roy from the Department of Zoology, Banaras Hindu University was the guest speaker who enlightened the audience on the topic “Drosophila as a Model Organism for Advanced Genetic Research”.
Professor Roy spoke about his research on the cloning of a gene involved in vesicle trafficking in fruit fly cells. The role of the gene involved in the morphogenesis of the cell membrane and in specific stages of development and differentiation has been very well explained. The abnormal role of this gene in cancer, muscular dystrophy, eye disease and Alzheimer’s disease has also been discussed.
Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, Prof. Umesh Rai was the chief guest and Prof. Bechan Lal, Vice Chancellor, Cluster University of Jammu was the guest of honour.
Professor Umesh Rai congratulated the speaker for the outstanding job he is doing at BHU and for giving this wonderful speech. He also appreciated the School of Biotechnology for organizing such conferences which benefit students, scholars and professors.
Earlier, Professor BK Bajaj, Director of the School of Biotechnology, officially introduced the speaker. Professor Manoj Kumar Dhar, former Vice Chancellor, JU, also graced the occasion.
A large number of students, scholars and teachers from the School of Biotechnology, the Institute of Human Genetics and the Department of Zoology were present and greatly benefited from the conference. The event concluded with words of wisdom from Professor Umesh Rai.
The vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Madhulika Bhagat. The procedure was conducted by Dr. Sheetal Ambardar.
