LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK) – Bullock Protection in Longview has given K9 Heat a second chance at life.
Heat is a two-year-old red-nosed Pitbull who was on an animal shelter’s euthanasia list.
She is now a vital member of the East Texas security team and community. According to Bullock Protection, Heat is the first outdoor scent gun dog in East Texas.
“A static dog, you have to point them in the direction or you have to send them in the direction of the scent like a room or a person. I told her to find it and she started on a track and she picked up the smell and just started following her,” said her handler, Cory Thrasher.
Heat can find weapons in small spaces or places as big as a football game.
“If there’s a gun, she’ll find it,” Thrasher said.
Most K-9 dogs are German Shepherds or Belgian Malinois, but Bullock Protection dog handlers say other breeds should have a chance.
“They were just shocked to see that a Pitbull could do the same job as an evil Belgian or Dutch Shepherd,” Thrasher said.
Bullock Protection responds to calls in regions that cover up to 23 different school districts.
