Colorado Humane Society seizes over 25 animals after neglect investigation

PENROSE, Colo. – Thirty animals have been seized during an investigation into animal neglect and cruelty.

On Tuesday, October 25, the Fremont County Sheriff’s Department, assisted by the Colorado Humane Society, the Denver Dumb Animals League, the Colorado Department of Agriculture, Code 3 Associates and the Mark Inspector of State, executed a search warrant at the 500 block of 1st Street in Penrose, Colorado.

The search warrant resulted in the seizure of 26 horses, a dog, a large pot belly and two exotic birds. The search warrant was the result of an animal abuse and neglect report submitted to the Colorado Humane Society and the Denver Dumb Friends League.

The animals were taken to Lucille’s Voice, an animal shelter in Penrose, Colorado. News5 reached out to the owners for comment, but were told they would not speak to the matter.

Among the animals seized, the pot-bellied pig was euthanized at a local facility after the recommendation of two veterinarians on site. Many of the horses the sheriff’s office recovered had serious medical and health issues and are being evaluated for treatment plans.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office said some of the animals recovered were from as far away as Louisiana based on paperwork recovered from the property.

“A lot of these animals were rescued from so-called ‘killing pads,'” Fremont County Sheriff Allen Cooper said. “Unfortunately the reason many of them were sent to these enclosures is that they already had significant injuries or health issues. You are not doing these animals justice if you save them and you don’t have lack the staff or resources to adequately manage their pain, care for their injuries, or provide the basics of food and water.

All animals seized are now in the custody of the Colorado Humane Society and are being evaluated for treatment plans or euthanasia.

This is a developing story and News5 will continue to update as we get more information.
